Ideal Exercise for Any Age

What do Kristen Bell, Zooey Deschanel, Marisa Tomei, Kelly Osbourne, Beyonce, Grace Jones, Michelle Obama, Liv Tyler, and Christie Brinkley all have in common?
They all hula hoop to stay fit!

Not just that, but take a look at that list again, notice the enormous difference in age? That's what makes hula hooping an ideal exercising tool. Regardless as to how old you are, it is a suitable workout for any age! Anyone can easily learn how to hula hoop with the weighted hoop. Weighted fitness hoops are heavier (which allows them to move slower), and much bigger than the old fashioned kid's hula hoops. There's no excuse why anyone who wants to be fit, healthy and have fun, shouldn't pick up the modern day hula hoop.

While much of the hooping credit goes to the company Wham-O for introducing the hula hoop to American pop culture in the 1950's; the introduction of the hula hoop actually dates back all the way to the early Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks (thousands of years ago).

How I Discovered Hula Hooping for Fitness

Like many others, I disliked exercising routines, with a passion. Traditional workouts tend to be quite rigid, boring, and hard on your joints.

An epiphany.

More than eight years ago; I found myself frustrated by the lack of results I was receiving from typical workout routines. I had just had my second child and was adamant on trimming down. No matter what I did, nothing seemed to work.

One day while shopping at a local department store, I came across a box of kids hula hoops. BAM! A sudden flash of insight hit me. I thought, "Geez, I bet that would be a fun workout!".

I didn't buy one that day; instead, I ran home and started researching hula hooping on the web. I was counter-culture of hula hooping! These people weren't using the flimsy kid's hoops that we all played with as kids. No, their hoops were much bigger.
shocked to discover that there existed an entire
I endlessly read and watched videos about people hula hooping with these weighted hoops and not just having fun, but losing weight while they did it! I was amazed. "You mean I can get fit and have fun?!", I thought. What a concept! So, I spent $25.00 on a 36", 2 1/2 lb hula hoop from a company called Canyon Hoops. After eight years, I still have and use that same hoop (seen in the picture).
After standing in front of the t.v., hula hooping every single day for 45 minutes to an hour; three months later I had lost over 30 pounds! I was having so much fun and felt so good hula hooping during that time; I didn't notice the amount of weight I was losing. Until one day I looked in the mirror and noticed my jeans were far too big for me! I did this while drinking tons of water and eating whatever I wanted (in my mid-thirties). It felt like a miracle.

I believe that the key to this rapid weight loss was that I stopped obsessing about it and just focused on the fun of hula hooping. There were times I would pick up the hoop and hula for five or ten minutes, here and there, throughout the day. I didn't keep a rigid schedule. I just hooped whenever I felt the urge to, which was frequently because I loved how it made me feel.

How Sitting Too Much is Affecting Your Body

The Importance of Regular Exercise

When it comes down to it, regardless of how young or old a person is, there remains one simple fact; exercise is a necessity. We are living in a lethargic time. It is said; that a whopping 86% of American workers sit down the majority of the time to do their job. Never before has man been so sedentary.

Extra weight costs us physically and financially.
In 2011, the CDC estimated that healthcare costs exceed $8,600 annually (per capita).

Since you have to find something to get you moving, why not choose something that is fun and easy? Aside from the immense physical benefits that hula hooping provides, you'll also gain an overall mental state of well-being.

Before you knock it or shrug it off, I challenge you to give it a try! I did, and it changed my life!

Native American Hoop Dance is a form of storytelling dance incorporating anywhere from one to thirty hoops as props. These props are used to create both static and dynamic shapes, which represent various animals, symbols, and storytelling elements.

What are the Benefits of Hula Hooping?

Glad you asked!
  • Hula hooping burns major calories in a short amount of time! According to a study done by the American Council on Exercise, hula hooping burns around seven calories per minute which translates to 210 calories per 30 minutes! Those are some impressive numbers!
  • While hula hooping seems to focus mainly on the core muscles, it is, in fact, a full body workout.
  • An excellent activity for the heart! Hooping is easy on the joints, yet is still an intense workout. After hooping for a minute or two, you will notice immediately, how fast your heart rate increases.
  • It is excellent for the health of your spine. By rocking side to side and back and forth, the motion assists in strengthening the muscles that surround the spine; overall, adding more stability and flexibility.
  • Back to the core. It is one of the only exercises that can help a woman's muscular wall reattach (the muscular wall detaches during pregnancy to allow room for the baby to grow, once this happens, it is tough to re-tighten and re-flatten the belly, entirely).
  • It is an exercise that trims a woman down in all of the right places, allowing for a very attractive hourglass frame. Think of how wood is widdled down. You are essentially doing this by hooping on a regular basis.

My 2 Year Hoop Journey and Weight Loss Transformation

Which Style of Hoop is Best Suited for You?

There are two distinct styles of hoops. There is the weighted fitness hoop, and then there is the dance hoop. The weighted fitness hoop is what it sounds like, a hoop that is a bit heavier (typically between 2 lbs - 5 lbs). The dance hoop is a bit lighter device; the light weight of the hoop allows the user to perform tricks while dancing.

The weighted hoop is perfect for the person who wants to only waist hula hoop. Waist hooping (which is what I did to get fit) with a weighted hoop is highly effective. All it takes is spinning it around your waist (this engages every muscle in the body beginning with your core) for an extended period.

However, if you are more interested in learning the art of hoop dancing, then you will need to purchase or make a light weight adult hoop (expressly designed for the hoop dancer).

The Guinness Book of World Records honor for the longest hula hooping marathon is held by Aaron Hibbs (Columbus, OH). In 2009, he hula hooped straight for 74 hours and 54 minutes!
