Are You Happy?

It's an honest question and a question you should reflect upon often. When you read the definition of happy, does it ring true for you, or do you find yourself wishing for those words to be true?
There are many misconceptions on what is required to attain authentic happiness. Some treat the idea like it is a place they will one day reach. Others treat it like it is something only certain people deserve to have, which is not them. And then there are those that think life is serious business and this idea of la-di-da happiness is unrealistic.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret; they are all wrong.
Happiness is a state of being; it is a choice. A lifestyle choice. Just like when you wake in the morning and choose to wear that blue shirt. It is that simple.
So simple that you can choose right now, at this very moment—to just be happy.

 Happy Tip #1

Before You Get Out Of Bed

Believe it or not, your entire day is shaped by your first string of thoughts that go through your head as you wake in the morning. Remember this, what you think, you inadvertently create. So, why not fuel your day with purposeful thoughts of happiness and gratitude? At first, it may feel weird or even unnatural to feed your mind thoughts that may not necessarily resonate with you. That's ok. Over time, through practice and repetition, you will have programmed your mind to lean toward a more positive outlook, automatically.

What you focus on, grows. So start focusing on feeling happy!
Here are some examples of how I wake in the morning. I say these three times in my mind before I open my eyes.
  • Thank You. Today is going to be a great day!
  • I am happy, beautiful, and blessed!
  • I am full of love!
  • Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
You don't have to use these exact phrases. I often say whatever comes into my heart at that moment. Just go with it. The more you do it, the easier and more real these thoughts become. Just remember to keep it simple. After doing this for a couple of weeks, you'll notice how much brighter your life and outlook has become. Our outer world is a direct reflection and product of our inner world.
Now is a great time to start nurturing the goodness that already lives inside you.

Happy Tip #2

Live In the Moment

If you want to be happy, you have to get out of your head. Life isn't something that is beginning tomorrow or happened yesterday—it's right now. So, live, RIGHT NOW. In How To Live in the Moment, I discuss how important it is to stop the constant mind chatter and embrace the moment you are living in. Yesterday doesn't matter anymore and tomorrow doesn't exist.

Being in the moment is not easy. It is a constant battle between the past and the future. It takes reflection, a conscious effort, and patience. Each time you find your thoughts carrying you away, simply take a deep breath and wake up to whatever it is you are physically doing. Bring your mind back to your current activity. The mind is like a small child; it takes much patience and repetition to teach it to settle down and keep quiet. Practice, practice, practice. And then when you are done with that, practice some more.

Meditating is an excellent tool to help you settle your mind and open you up to endless, positive, possibilities. One of my most favorite meditative audios is Dr. Wayne Dyer's meditation cd I AM Wishes Fulfilled Meditation (Amazon Sponsored Link)

Happy Tip #3

Smile More

First of all, a simple smile goes a long way, with yourself and others. In fact, there have been psychological studies supporting the idea that smiling (even faking it) has shown to considerably, decrease stress levels. The first thing people see when they look at you is your face. How you greet and interact with others begins with your facial expressions.

If happiness is what you seek, start being conscious of your body language. Watch out, though; smiles are contagious! After you send out that first conscious smile to a stranger and they send one back, you'll be hooked! It's like an instant jolt of positive energy running through you. But, keep in mind that some people are sour grapes no matter how much you cheese at them, just accept that not everyone will dig your positive nature. Shrug it off and carry on.

Happy Tip #4

Start Living A Life of Gratitude

One thing all genuinely happy people have in common is that they are all thankful for their many blessings. There is power in positive thinking and what we think about grows. If you start living from a gracious mindset, you will discover more things coming into your life to be thankful for. Like begets like. Focus on the seemingly negative, and you will undoubtedly see more and more of it show up in your life. Cultivate a genuine appreciation for the good things and the seemingly not-so-good things, and you will find more and more things to be thankful for.

If you sit back for a second and just take a good hard look at your life thus far, you will notice that some very difficult circumstances preceded all of the greatest moments of your life. It's just the way things go. It is the natural balance of energy. When you can step back and view life as a passive observer, you'll begin to see that things aren't so black and white. There is goodness all around; you just have to squint a little harder to see it sometimes.

If you want to be a happier you, start appreciating your blessings. And yes, sometimes those blessings come in a not-so-pretty package.

What you focus on grows, so find the beauty in everything you experience.

Happy Tip #5

Do What You Love

Simple as that. You know what sorts of activities make you feel alive! So, just do them! This isn't rocket science.

Happy people do what they love. Period. They don't sit around making up excuses for how they don't have the time or money. They have the will, so they make a way.

If creating art is your thing and money is tight, visit Dollar stores, thrift stores, and yard sales. Create with what you have. If writing is your passion, then join Hubpages.com. It's a wonderful social community for writers who do nothing but write and positively support one another. Who knows, you might even get good enough to make a buck or two.

The point is, happy people don't wait around for life to happen to them. They get up and out there and make life happen. If you are not living your passion, you are not living life.
If you start living your passion today, you just may open doors to possibilities and opportunities you never thought were possible!
